Our Commitment
Accessibility isn't a feature we add at the end. It's where we start. The Toy Cartel is an inclusive design consultancy — the accessibility of our own website is a direct expression of what we stand for.
We are committed to making thetoycartel.com accessible to all people, including those who use assistive technology, have low vision, motor impairments, cognitive differences, or are Deaf or hard of hearing.
We review and improve the accessibility of this website on an ongoing basis. If you find something that doesn't work as expected, we want to hear about it.
Legal Framework
In Australia, digital accessibility is supported by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (DDA), which prohibits discrimination in the provision of goods, services, and facilities — including websites and digital products. The Australian Human Rights Commission has published advisory notes indicating that inaccessible websites can constitute unlawful discrimination under the DDA.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the recognised technical standard for digital accessibility in Australia and internationally. Government agencies are required to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA as a minimum; we design to the more current WCAG 2.2 Level AA standard.
Conformance Status
This website is designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. WCAG 2.2 is published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and is the current international standard for web accessibility.
WCAG 2.2 AA conformance will be formally verified through independent accessibility testing prior to public launch. This statement will be updated to reflect the audit outcome.
Note: TTC provides WCAG accessibility recommendations and assessments to clients. We do not provide WCAG certification. Formal certification is issued by accredited third-party conformance testing bodies.
How We've Built It
This website has been built with the following accessibility features:
- Semantic HTML5 — correct heading hierarchy, landmark regions, and meaningful structure throughout
- ARIA labels and roles on all interactive and navigational elements
- Colour contrast — all text meets WCAG 2.2 AA minimum contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
- Skip navigation link on every page to allow keyboard users to bypass repeated content
- All interactive elements are keyboard accessible and have visible focus indicators
- Images include descriptive alt text; decorative images are marked as such
- Typeset in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next — a font designed for low-vision readers — for headings and key copy
- Motion: animations respect the
prefers-reduced-motionuser preference - Interactive disclosures use native HTML
<details>/<summary>where used — no JavaScript required, natively accessible
Testing Approach
We test against WCAG 2.2 Level AA using a combination of automated and manual methods:
- Screen readers — VoiceOver (macOS/iOS), NVDA (Windows)
- Keyboard-only navigation testing across all page templates
- Colour contrast analysis using APCA and WCAG contrast algorithms
- Automated scanning (axe DevTools, Lighthouse)
- Manual review of heading structure, focus order, and landmark regions
Known Limitations
- Third-party embedded content may not fully meet WCAG 2.2 AA. We assess third-party tools for accessibility before use and raise issues directly with vendors.
- Downloadable documents, including PDF and DOCX files, will be reviewed for accessibility prior to publication.
